Monthly Highlights

Below are photos and a story from the recent month's guided fly fishing trips.

January 2011

"The weather started off beautiful and sunny but I knew the nor'wester would rear it's head before the day was out. It was question of how far through the day Randal and I would get before having to battle a raging head wind.

Choosing a location based on the weather is the eternal guessing game for fly fishing guides.

Away we went and everything went to plan to begin with - windless with the promise of the sun breaking through. Randal was a relative newcomer to the sport so we started with some casting exercises to iron out the "bugs". A take and a missed strike on a cicada meant the first fish had a lucky reprieve but after that we were "on the money" even though by then the wind had started to blow.

Being a couple of decades older than my young client you could be excused for thinking that we wouldn't have a lot in common but we are both into sport and Randal is an accomplished rower having competed in the Cambridge vs Oxford universities event on the Thames. No problems with today's long walk for this young man! Rowing is big in Twizel due to it's nationally important rowing course.

Back to the fishing. The photo is of a nice brownie Randal captured on a nymph a technique that he had not used a lot before. Something new to try back home in his native Canada!"
